HOW TO: Select The Right Pig For Breeding

A farmer should carefully consider the following points when considering going in pig breeding:


  • Choose good gilts from a superior breed of sows that wean 9-10 piglets per litter and are considered to be good mothers.

  • Selected gilts should have at least 12-14 teats to be able to comfortably nurse a large litter.

  • Gilts with strong legs and well-developed body and thigh muscles should be healthy.

  • As more knowledge and skills are acquired, beginners in pig farming are advised to start with about 1-2 gilts/Sows and progress.
